Known as a “Living through art specialist,” Daniella Rubinovitz has a particular vision for meaning behind artwork. Daniella delivers high‐impact, low‐cost, customized insight for turbo‐charging individuals with a creative tool for channeling life clarity. After 10 years of working in the corporate world designing high tech products, she got back in contact with her early passion for fine art. Inspired to deepen her knowledge of the psychological effects of colors, lines and shapes, Daniella obtained her degree as an art therapist. In just 3 short years, Daniella has created a program that allows participants to experience clarity through art. Incorporating fine art, the process of art therapy and the business world has put her skills to the test as an entrepreneur. Specialized in experiencing art as a creative tool for clarity: fun is assured. Daniella runs Atelier Werkplaats Molenpad in Amsterdam. 31 Million is a personal style consultancy that trains women on the ins and outs of French fashion whilst exposing them to the secrets of French style and nutrition. Our focus is to offer women in their 20’s to 50’s French style and nutrition lessons, organize for personal wardrobe consultations, arrange exclusive and fun Paris shopping trips, as well as provide a rental platform where women can gain access to French-styled clothing and accessories for any occasion.

31 Million started as a fun venture in Amsterdam, where Franco-Iranian Nicky Adle was missing the action of Paris shopping and decided to spread the word that French women don’t have more taste than others but simply dress and eat according to implicit rules that together constitute the French Touch. Raised in Paris, Nicky has been living in and out of France for the past 15 years, has never (ever!) shopped outside her hometown, or given up on her French eating habits. Like most Parisians, she knows the capital’s shops, current styles and future trends.

On weekdays Nicky is an INSEAD MBA graduate and internet entrepreneur, currently launching wondersale.nl, a promotions and discounts webshop that activates on key calendar dates such as Sinterklaas, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day.

We had a fabulous discussion with our members new and senior at the Library in January. We’d like to broaden the discussion and present some of our new and on going collaborations with our members.

Please join the EuropeanPWN-Amsterdam board at the Renaissance Hotel for discussions about opportunities here and abroad in collaboration with some of our other European Professional Womens Neworks.

Guests are of course always welcome to the borrel, conversation will be tailored to our “club” business. There will be no guest speaker at this event. Rieke Smakman will be facilitating our discussion.

Now-a-days membership in an organization is fairly fluid, in that we have a “rolling admissions” process. There is no fixed “apply by” date – so the membership database is constantly being updated. For the purposes of this data analysis – a capture of the membership data was taken in November 2009. Some of the data has previously been described in the December Newsletter article.

Amsterdam’s membership in 2009 totaled approximately 303 members and is distributed amongst the five categories.

We come from 36 different countries (43 if you include our second affiliation – dual citizenships). A representative distribution in percentages of those reporting data is show below. 214 of our 303 members are included in the following diagram:

Slightly more folks report their nationality as compared to their year of birth. Age is under reported in our database, however the distribution of reported ages is as follows:

Corporate Sponsors of the European Professional Womens Network in 2009 included the pan-european and global companies: Orange, IE, Deloitte, Coca-Cola, Sodexo, Mercer, AON, Alcatel-Lucent, Mexx, BNP Paribas. Their financial and in kind donations to the network in the form of memberships, venues, speakers, and technologies are extremely important to sustain the organization and to augment the programming. In Amsterdam the 51 individuals making up the Corporate Member category are distributed as follows:

The distribution of participating partners is known to vary by city. This data applies only to Amsterdam in the 4th quarter of 2009.

Below we would also like to look a bit more in detail into the composition of each of the membership categories.

Here we see that the “sponsoring” Corporate members (51) are one third of all participating members from large corporations (144) so actually this figure could also be drawn as follows:

The majority of our Members find the EuropeanPWN network “on their own” – this is to say, they are not officially corporate members, they are not students, they are international and Dutch born business women looking to network “cross” B2B borders. Of these Members, nearly half of them work at companies that are considered to be large corporations (90) but participate as individual members and not as part of a corporate sponsorship program. There are also compositional differences in the corporate members from sponsoring organizations and from corporate members that find us by their own affiliations.

As you can see all of our Executive VP's and C-level members come from our "regular" membership

One third of our total members (93) direct, own, or work in smaller companies and enterpreneurships. In this “Independent” category 20 % are business owners/directors, 15 % experts (doctors, lawyers, professors, engineers), and 51 % are consultants and/or coaches.

Honorary Members number three in Amsterdam. Our Honorary members are chosen by a unanimous vote of the Board of Directors. Amsterdam honors founding member Agnes Benjamin, Advisory Board member Annette Nijs and Pauline van der Meer Mohr. Josephine Green one of our past (and founding) members of WIN in Amsterdam, is Senior Director of
Trends and Strategy at Philips Design she is an Honorary Member to the Federation from it’s beginnings in 2005.

MBA Student Members. Amsterdam has a strategic alliance with Erasmus University and offers memberships to students in the Rotterdam School of Management and MBAOne programs. This alliance in addition to membership also includes supporting joint programming initiatives. In addition to drawing upon our membership for speakers, panel participants, and guest lecturers, MBA students also take advantage of our mentoring program and publications series.

The last category – is the “staff” designation. This designation at the moment is reserved for the Board of Directors but other times in recent history has also included non-board positions such as Mentoring Coordinator, Webmaster etc. Amsterdam is organized 100% by volunteer efforts. We had no paid staff positions in 2009. Our Board of Directors in 2009 included: Rieke Smakman, Lucia Lloyo,Tip Atkins, Camilla Bjorkqvist, Judith Dieleman (first half of the year), Caroline van Leuven (second half of the year), Clara Ko, Katharina Pohl, and Anna Farrenkopf

Twenty-one of our members gathered at the Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam on 27 January 2010 for New Year’s drinks, followed by an Open Board Meeting of the EuropeanPWN-Amsterdam Board.

Anna Farrenkopf opened the meeting and talked about the history of the network since it was incorporated in 1986, how we got involved in the Federation 5 years ago and the accomplishments of our network builders. This set the stage for an invigorating discussion on our City Network’s ambitions for the future, and our desire to continue to play a lead role in the Federation’s future successes.

The Amsterdam Board members shared their stories on what motivates them and their passion for the network. Their enthusiasm triggered interest with the attendees to collaborate and develop leadership skills by getting involved in exciting projects and opportunities that are unfolding within the Amsterdam City Network organization and on cross-network level.

Ursula Brinkmann, Managing Director of Intercultural Business Improvement commented: “It’s fantastic to know that the European wide network creates an environment for women to prove they can make a difference. Members should seek this opportunity to show they’re the right stuff .”

The Amsterdam Board members would like to take this opportunity to thank all attendees for their continued support. We will be following-up to continue this collaborative effort. We plan to schedule a follow-up Open Board Meeting in March 2010, and a number of intermediate get-togethers where needed to advance specific items. The Entrepreneur’s Corner is one of the new and exciting initiatives of the European Professional Women’s Network. Its objective is to ensure that the needs and interests of the entrepreneurs in the network are being met – which is certainly especially important given the current economic climate.

To support this initiative, EPWN invites you to a brainstorming session on 28th of April facilitated by Ursula Brinkmann. The session is intended to gather and collate all ideas, needs, interests, concerns that you as a self-employed EPWN member, as one of our entrepreneurs, have identified, and to communicate the outcome of the session to the EPWN board.

Ursula will guide you through the process of Silent Brainstorming, conducted in groups of about 7 participants. Whatever comes up during the brainstorming session we will then cluster together and prioritize in an engaging, commitment-building process. Ursula has used this approach several times in her own training interventions and just the method alone is worth trying out!

Ursula is co-founder and director of Intercultural Business Improvement Ltd, a consultancy and training firm specialized in intercultural management development.

Ursula has been delivering courses and presentations for a number of public and private organizations. One of her recent assignments consisted of workshops on Managing Dutch-German cultural differences for the integration teams involved in a major cross-border acquisition. In 2007/2008 she was responsible for an integration program for a European corporation; the program combined training, individual assessment, coaching as well as networking events for 180 managers.

Together with Oscar van Weerdenburg, Ursula developed the Intercultural Readiness Check (IRC), a questionnaire assessing four key intercultural competences. The IRC has been widely recognized in the academic and business communities, and its database by now is one of the largest sources of information on intercultural competences world-wide.

The amount knowledge and wisdom within the EPWN group is deep and wide. Speed networking is a great way to extract it and share it.

Think about all of the ideas, information, and contacts that each person in the network has. Imagine how much we can help each other and what kind of opportunities we will be able to create by meeting face-to-face and exchanging our knowledge.

In one evening of Speed Networking you will have the opportunity to meet between 10-13 people and exchange ideas, information, and resources. Brings loads of business cards, you are going to need them!

In preparation for the event, please think about:

1. A very brief introduction of yourself
2. What you have to offer people in the network
3. What you need from people in the network

What happens after the event is just as important as the actual event itself. Be prepared to follow through with the connections you make. Relationships are built over time and based on trust. Keeping your commitments goes a long way to building trust.
